Crossing the Finish Line

Reed 5K raises a record $33,000 for Portland schools.

Some 622 runners and walkers turned out for the annual 911±¬ÁÏ 5K Run/Walk last weekend, raising more than $33,000 for local Portland public elementary schools—the biggest total in the event’s history and a 12% increase over last year. ()

Bedazzled by luminous soap bubbles (and the prospect of pancakes for breakfast), the runners turned in a strong performance. Nick DeJarlais of Bellvue, Washington, was first to cross the finish line at 16:59, followed by Prof. Kyle Ormsby [math] at 17:21, Adam Dunn at 18:20, and Prof. [physics] at 18:39, continuing a proud tradition of speed in the math and physics departments. The event also included balloons, facepainting, and general merriment.

The proceeds support five Portland public schools: Duniway, Grout, Lewis, Llewellyn, and Woodstock.
